TikTok fined $92 million for violating the Illinois privacy law that allows lawsuits to be filed against companies that collect consumer data without their knowledge and consent

Parent company ByteDance, owner of the most popular short video sharing platform, TikTok, has agreed to pay $92 million after privacy cases brought by a large number of US users after claiming that the video-sharing application TikTok violated their privacy by using it without their knowledge.

The federal government has sued TikTok, accusing them of violating Illinois' biometric privacy law, which in turn allows users to file lawsuits against companies that collect consumer data without prior consent. It includes taking pictures of the user using the camera or fingerprints.
Illinois ranks as the only state with a law that allows people to seek damages in cases like that of TikTok and companies that collect data without permission.

The response came in approval in a statement from TikTok to the e-mail and was as follows:

While we disagree with users on TikTok privacy violations and instead of undergoing lengthy litigation, we would like to focus our efforts on building a safe and enjoyable experience for the TikTok community.

Facebook also agreed to pay $550 million in settlement of cases and calls from users in early February.
TikTok is still in the hands of federal judges.

Many rights and privacy researchers have also talked about the law as the strongest form of protection in the commercial use of data that companies collect about users, and it is the only surviving law from the ongoing efforts of companies in the technology industries to weaken it.

Illinois is one of only three states that have laws restricting the use of biometric data, with Illinois coming first, followed by Texas and Washington, but they do not allow individual lawsuits.
